The era of spanking your kids with the bottom of your sandal has apparently come to an end. According the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that nonviolent forms of punishment are rising, and that the use of spanking and hitting as discipline has decreased. For the study, researchers looked at four national surveys, spanning 23 years of data, and found that, in 1998, 46% of mothers in middle class families said they used spanking as discipline. By 2011, that number had dropped to 21%. In that same period of time, the number of moms who regularly put their kids in time out dropped from 41% to 81%.
When I was reading this article, I thought I basically grew up with a sandal glued to my butt. But, I have noticed a change in the way parents are disciplining their children. When you enter a store especially a toy store, you never hear parents say the words No anymore. Everything is 'yes, yes, yes', we always want more. The problem is the more you give the child the more they will want in return. With that comes more attitude, the day that you tell the child no is the day they will put a huge show in the middle of the store. Kids are becoming more and more spoiled. Parents instead of wanting to discipline their kids, want to be their friends. But, Sometimes it doesn't hurt to be a little more strict when it comes to raising your own kids.
