Questions You Hear When Parents Try To Use Social Media

Growing up with social media, kids are beginning to learn how to use Instagram as soon as they can talk. Ok, that may be an exaggeration, but newer generations of children are learning the ins and outs of social media very young, and all the cool parents want to stay "hip." Thus, they are approaching their children for some pointers. If a parent has approached you to learn how to use social media, these five questions sound all too familiar.

1. Why can't I zoom in?

You cannot zoom on Instagram. You just can't. You can however take a screen shot and then zoom in, but then teaching someone how to take a screenshot is a whole other ballpark.

2. Where did the picture go?

Snapchats only last a few seconds. Unless it is a snapstory and then it will last 24 hours. Why? Well rumor has it that it is because snapchat originated for sexual pictures that people only wanted to send for a few seconds, but no one wants to explain that to a parent.

3. Didn't I message that to you privately?

No. When you asked me if I had put my ointment on last night you wrote it on my Facebook wall. A Facebook wall is public-- as in everyone and their mother saw that you asked me that.

4. What is a hashtag?

You use this symbol (#) you do not spell out the word before typing out a phrase. You cannot use spaces. And it basically connects what you posted to everything else with that same hashtag-- let that sink in.

5. How do I take a selfie?

You might have to show them some examples for this one, but you'll get some cute pics with your parents out of it!

In the end, we love our parents and teaching them to use social media is a step closer to closing that generation gap. It is nice that they want to adapt with the times because it helps them to understand us better. So go bond with your parents and teach them how to use social media; maybe they will throw you a like on your profile picture!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
