The Choice: Parable Of The Cave

Which door will you choose? Choose wisely.

One day a young man decided to take a walk in the woods to clear his mind and see the sights. As he walked the grass seemed to appear greener, darker and the flowers seemed to share an aroma of sweetness that filled the air. He continued walking in the cool breeze through the grass. Then a trail appeared that faded into the distance. This piqued his curiosity, so he decided to see where the path would lead.

After walking what seemed like forever, he noticed in the distance two caves. The closer he got, he could see words carved above the entrances. The letters began to become clearer with each step. But, he still could not understand the inscriptions so he decided to go a little bit closer. Standing in front of the caves, he could finally read and understand the writings.

The one on the right read “sacrifice flesh, enter through this narrow door, pick up your cross, and follow me.”

However, written above the cave entrance on the left read “it’s all about you; drink what you want; eat what you want; smoke what you want. We are not your Mother.”

The young man considered the words and thought the words on the left sounded like fun. But, the words on the right seemed like hard work. "What should I do?" He said to himself. “Maybe I should go back the way I came. He turned to look for the path and to his dismay, it no longer existed. Instead of the well manicured lush pasture of green grass with a paved trail stood thick overgrown grass, thorn bushes, and weeds.

He was trapped and lost. He reached for his cell phone to call for help but there was no signal. The light grew dim, the sun began to set, and he could hear strange noises. Suddenly it became clear to him that there was no more time. He had to choose. No more straddling the fence. It was decision time. He closed his eyes and walked towards the entrances.

"Then Jesus said to them again, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.'" — John 10: 7-10 NKJV

In the passage below, the cave on the right represents the narrow gate. And the cave on the left represents the wide gate.

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." — John 7:13-14 NKJV

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
