Palm Trees in The Snow is a Spanish romantic film following the love story between Bisila and Killian. It is set in the 1950s through 2003. In this film we learn the history of the colonization and imperializing by the Spaniards of the New Guinea.
This film had amazing cinematography in showing the scenery of Guinea and Spain, but it lacked certain characters’ story lines in it. Palm Trees in The Snow showed the importance of love and family. Also, even though the film is a romantic film I didn’t like the fact that they were brief about the colonization. How the Spanish tried to force the natives of guinea to learn their language and lifestyle. Also, how the Spanish treated Africans as sex objects and fetishes.
In 1954, brothers Killian and Jacobo leaves Northern Spain to go back to their home in New Guinea with their father to work and make money for their family in Spain. While there, they meet their old childhood friend Julia.
Killian meets a married woman named Daniella Bisila and falls in love with her.The film shows how racism and sexism plays a part in their characters’ lives.
The plot thickens once Killian leaves home to say goodbye to his younger sister that passes away and Killian returns back to Guinea. Once he returns; he rapes Bisilia-- Killian’s soul mate!
I won’t spoil the rest; you all just have to watch it. Overall, this film lacked certain characters’ stories and lacked the reasons as to why New Guinea was colonized.
