While honoring the arrival of female candidates such as Ilhan Omar or Kamala Harris in Congress, the results of the US Presidential election have been painful to swallow for the Black community. Perhaps more disturbing for Black Christians, is the reality that 4 out of 5 White Evangelicals voted for a demagogue who bragged about sexual assault, divorced then remarried, and invested in the gambling business [1].Truly, the lies of deception such Christians have chosen to identify themselves with is a tragic--but predictable--legacy which will negatively effect the reputation of religion for future generations.
In this time of lament, where many of us feel back-stabbed from our white brothers and sisters, we must not be like them and fall into a state of apathy. Instead, let us carry the torch of glory (at our own pace!) handed by our ancestors and run this long race-- filled with pain and exclusion--for the empowerment of our community, the well-being of our nation, and for the glory of God.
