The weekend parents come to town is one of the most interesting weekends of any given semester. Having your parents in Oxford, no matter how many times they've come to town, always feels like a sort of alternate universe. Within the chaos of showing your parents around for the 400th time, or shopping for that outfit you've had your eye on but not the money for, comes the big choice of where to eat. Of course, you want to go somewhere that you love, but also that is worthy of gracing your parents with when they only get to experience the greatness of Oxford food a handful of times. For any case or any family, there are for sure some that just can't ever be missed.

1. Ajax

A Manning favorite, this restaurant is a MUST hit for first time Oxford visitors. Especially if your family isn't originally from the south like mine, it's the perfect place to show off that homestyle southern cooking (and maybe even run into some celebrities).

2. Volta

Even though a lot of parents tend to stay on the Square when it comes to food, Volta is a hidden gem that a lot of people seem to forget about when they have visitors. Your parents will love the frozen mojitos and the Hotty Toddy balls guaranteed.

3. City Grocery

City Grocery is one of those restaurants that everyone in Oxford talks about constantly. It's a little on the pricier side of the grocery restaurants, but hey, when your parents are in town it's a good excuse to get some good food and sit on the cute patio overlooking the square.

4. Big Bad Breakfast

An absolute classic. I don't know of a parent that has ever been to Oxford without going to BBB. Plus, it's probably the only time you'll be up early enough to get in line before the wait is three hours long. Make sure you let them buy a shirt or mug to commemorate the whole experience.

5. Mesquite Chophouse

When you and your parents are in the mood for something on the fancier side (if you don't get a steak when they're in town you're doing it wrong), a good suggestion is Mesquite Chophouse. They have great food, not bad prices, and the fancy atmosphere will definitely impress your folks.

6. The Coop at The Graduate

Another one of those spots that people forget about is the top of the Graduate. Maybe your parents are already staying there and it's super convenient. But even if they aren't, the rooftop bar scene is a nice break from the rest of the Square and has some pretty good apps to share, and honestly, can you beat that view?

7. Funky's

This may seem like an odd choice, but nothing beats a casual dinner drinking daiquiris and eating the best pizza in town. Any questions? I didn't think so.

8. Old Venice

I don't know about y'all but my family goes crazy for some Italian food. Sadly, we don't have a lot of Italian options in Oxford, but the unlimited bread at Old Venice and the fact that you can write your name on the walls really makes up for it. Plus, you can take your parent's up to the Summit for post-dinner drinks. Win-win.

Pick your favorite place or try to hit them all in one weekend. Either way, happy eating!!

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."
