As back to school commercials are airing more frequently on the TV and the countdown to back to school gets closer for many, I can't help but feel a pang of mixed emotions knowing I won't be going back to school or buying school supplies or new things for my dorm room. Despite that, I am reminded that I owe a lot to my alma mater. Between the hours spent in class, studying and working on projects, I learned a lot more than any textbook has to offer. I learned how to be myself. College taught me more than I could ever imagine; it taught me about myself.

My time in college was incredible. I honestly cannot put into words how amazing college truly was. It gave me countless experiences. College allowed me to meet so many different people from all over the world. College also allowed me to meet myself. College showed me who I really am. It showed me that I can unapologetically be myself and there is nothing wrong with that. I learned how to stand up for myself and to do the things that I want to do. I learned to take risks and to try new things.

College was where I learned that at the end of the day, I only have to answer to myself and if I can't go to sleep proud of who I am, then I am the only one that holds the power to change that. I learned to be curious and to continuously explore what the world has to offer. I learned to use my voice and to share my thoughts and ideas. I learned that I am much more capable than I give myself credit.

During the four years I spent there, college carefully molded me and tested me. It transformed me into who I am, who I was meant to be. College gave me all of the tools I needed to become myself. College taught me a lot, but the most important thing it taught was to love myself and for that, I am forever indebted.

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
