Valentine's Day is approaching! Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are filled with posts about relationship goals and gift ideas you may want your significant other to acknowledge. But is Valentine's Day really a holiday only for people in a relationship? Many people hate Valentine's Day because of the overused concept of love in a relationship. However, it can go beyond that.
Whether you are single or taken this Valentine's Day, it can be the perfect time to celebrate all the love that surrounds you. Valentine's Day is the holiday of shades of pinks and reds, little presents of appreciation and love. That doesn't mean it is a day that has to be celebrated strictly with your significant other. Most countries, unlike the United States, celebrate Valentine’s Day as a Friendship Day honoring and admiring the people who are in their lives. This is a completely different approach to the holiday and if we adopted it, it would cancel out all the negative stereotypes Valentine’s Day has.
So with that, admire the love that your parents, your siblings, your friends and anyone that you come into contact regularly with gives you. Write special notes to friends and family describing what you appreciate about them. Buy chocolate and spend time with your loved ones. Even though you should be letting everyone know how much you appreciate them regularly, Valentine's Day can be that extra special day to do so.
You could also use the holiday to splurge a little on yourself. Go out and buy candy and treat yourself to an extra episode of Netflix. Don't feel bad about all of the candy you've eaten.. Don't feel sorry for yourself as Valentine's Day is supposed to be a fun holiday!
This year, no matter who you choose to spend Valentine's Day with, just be sure to have fun and celebrate love in all its greatness.
