An Overdue Thank You To My Mom

I know as a mother you should support and care for me, but thank you for going above and beyond every time.

An Overdue Thank You To My Mom
Katelyn McKinnies

Mom,

It goes without saying that we have unconditional love for one another. It's a mother's job to take care of their child and support them, but you have always done more than that for me. Children talk about their parents being 'superheroes'. Sometimes I actually have to question if you are a real one. How you handle me and all these things in life? The world may never know. I don't say it enough, but thank you for all that you do.

I know not everyone gets as lucky as I did with a mom like you. Thank you for not giving up on me and always being my biggest support system. Thank you for allowing me the freedom to be able to travel and explore places. Thank you for always reminding me how proud you are of the person I'm becoming.

You are protective. Thank you for telling me to not hang out with certain people. They say your parents always catch onto the bad friends before you do and you should always listen to your parent's instincts. I now realize that you were right about 99.9 percent of the time and only want the best for me.

You are forgiving. Remember when I was 13, I would kick at the door and scream for hours? Yeah, I'm extremely embarrassed. I want to sincerely apologize for everything you had to put up with. Thank you for always forgiving me even when I'm being a brat for not getting my way.

You are understanding. Yes, you get mad whenever I call you about what has happened to me this time. Thank you for understanding mistakes happen and apparently they happen to me often. Oh, did I mention I'm thankful that you haven't strangled me to death yet?

You are good at faking it. Thank you for letting me be overdramatic when I needed to be. From the middle school drama to the high school breakups, thanks for acting like you sincerely cared even when it was a dumb situation.

You are kind and selfless. You would do anything for me. Without second guessing, you continue to put our needs before your own. Thank you for always finding a way to make what we want happen even if that means giving up something for yourself. I can't thank you enough for being as selfless as you are.

You are beautiful. I know you never want to believe us when we tell you, but I'm thankful to have your genes in me. You are naturally beautiful and not just on the outside.

You are supportive. If I want to switch schools for the 100th time or move half way across the country, you always listen to me explain why I want to do it. You give me motivation and courage to do things that not everyone would do. Thank you for believing in my dreams and goals, even if they sound unreasonable.

You are funny. Let's be real, what would I do without your crazy blonde Sarah moments? Even if something isn't funny, I still laugh when you do because I love seeing you happy.

You are strong. You never want to show us when you're feeling weak. I just want you to know that I'm only a phone call away if you ever need me. You don't always have to act so strong for us. Everyone has their bad days. Sometimes you just need to cry your eyes out when there's a heavy weight on your shoulders.

You are extraordinary. I know you doubt yourself often, but you've done the best any mother could ever do... and exceeded! You have two healthy, kinda normal children. You did it all by yourself for awhile and survived.

Eventually, I will not have to depend on you as much. I will never be able to repay you for all that you've done for me but I hope one day I can do something amazing for you (besides little gifts like I do now). You deserve the world mommy.

Thank you for being my shoulder to cry on, my go-to person, my counselor, and my biggest fan. I love you. (This is the time when you would say "I love you more")... I love you the most.

Sincerely, Your Daughter

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
