Overcoming A Difficult Time Through Self-Love

Dear reader, I don’t know what your story is. However, I do know that the majority of people, at some point in their lives, will hit a slump, a rough time, a bump in the road. Recently, I’ve overcome an unhappy place in my life, and if that applies to you too, I’d like to share some tips to overcoming overwhelming feelings and depression in a hard time in your life.

1. Don’t neglect your health and hygiene.

I put this one first because it is super important. No matter what is going on in your life, you need to take care of yourself. Depression is particularly adept at forcing normally routine-based people into forgetting to shower, brush their teeth, etc. Your mind may be elsewhere, but you must take the time to at least take care of your body. Shower daily, wear clean clothes, brush your hair and take care of your teeth. It will probably make you feel better overall, too.

2. Meditate.

In western culture, we are used to life being fast-paced, and being forever focused on our futures and goals. Taking just a few minutes of mindfulness a day can help ease your stress and worries. Researchers have found that meditation has helped ease the struggles of those suffering with anxiety and depression.

3. Keep your living space clean.

As well as keeping a healthy body and mind, you should keep your living spaces clean and tidy. Cleaning will make your life feel less cluttered and will motivate you to do other things.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Whether it is seeing a therapist or counselor or talking to a close friend, you do not need to go through whatever it is you are going through alone. Take advantage of every resource that you have, and try to face your problems head-on.

5. Engage in some form of physical activity daily.

You don’t need to become a gym rat or spend loads of money on equipment or gym fees. If you aren’t used to physical activity, perhaps you can start off with just a walk around the park or neighborhood. Studies show that physical activity can reduce not only short-term stress, but it can also help with long-term issues such as depression and anxiety.

I hope these tips help to ease whatever struggles you may be facing. Remember, you can't neglect your own mind and body while moving forward in life.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
