How I'm Overcoming Depression
Jessica Handy

This is for anyone who has gone through or is going through depression. The definition of depression is.. feelings of severe despondency and dejection. "Self-doubt creeps in and that swiftly turns to depression.” I have struggled with depression off and on for the past couple of years. It’s a very hard thing to go through, trust me I know. Everyone says that there is no cure for depression, but there is you just have to believe there is. If you sit there and believe you can’t get better, then you won’t simple as that. If you want to get through depression then you’re going to have to make yourself. I know somedays you want to just want to stay in bed, but you have to get out! You have to get out there!! Make yourself go outside and take a walk, enjoy the beautiful surroundings around you. You can’t sit around feeling sorry for yourself. That’s no way to get better. I believed for so long I couldn’t get better, until one day I was sitting there laying on my bed telling myself “why are you even here anymore?” Then something spoke to me and said “get up, what are you doing? Are you going to just sit here and be miserable for the rest of your life? You don’t want that. Go do something with yourself.” Then I did, it all changed that day. I didn’t feel sorry for myself anymore. I went and surrounded myself with people that loved me. They showed me why life was worth living.

In English class we were assigned to write a reversal poem which is when you read the poem from top to bottom it is negative but when you read it from bottom to top it’s positive. I sat there for hours trying to figure out what I was going to write about. I needed to write about something I related to. Then it came to me, depression. So I attached a video below of my reversal poem. Anyone who is going through depression, just know you aren’t alone. You can overcome depression.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
