How To Overcome The Mid-Summer Slump

Here's how to not fall victim.

It's summertime: the time to be young, wild, free and tan. And yet, you're finding yourself to be bored as a chalk board.

Now, it's time to conquer that summertime sadness. It's time to take back this hot and humid season, and here's how!

1. Stop watching whatever you've been binging on Netflix.

This may feel as if you are betraying your fellow Millennials, but it's better to become more involved with real people's lives rather than those of fictional characters. Sorry, Meredith Grey.

2. Soak up all of the Vitamin D you can while it's still warm.

But please remember to wear sunscreen!

3. Make a Summer's Resolution.

New Years' Resolutions are so six months ago ... literally. So challenge yourself now!

A few ingenious ideas include: make three new friends; read a book for leisure; or learn how to knit.

4. 'Tis the season of reunions, so bask in the glory of those reunions! #SquadUp

Family reunions, high school reunions, reunions with your family pets! The possibilities are endless!

5. Make the coolest summer playlist to get you through the rest of the summer. #TurnUp

Spotify is your best friend this summer.

6. Live the rest of your summer like a kid.

Play kickball in the street with your friends. Break out the old Slip 'N Slide. Run after ice cream trucks and invent yet another way to play tag.

7. Regularly commit to doing something you thoroughly enjoy.

Yes, you may be busy working or interning, but don't forget to actually enjoy your summer. Because before you know it, you'll be running late to class after your roommate ate the last of your peanut butter while begging your parents for more money after blowing all of your cash on a textbook you'll only be using twice during the whole semester.

8. Eat ice cream for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

No explanation needed.

9. And eat s'mores for dessert every day.

Again, no explanation needed.

10. Indulge in nostalgia.

Visit your old high school and grade school. Take a Snapchat of your old stomping grounds to prove to your friends that you're capable of leaving your house for something other than work.

11. Stray away from home.

Road trip! Go to the city! Go to the countryside! Go to the beach! Go to Canada! The sky's the limit, so dream big.

12. Lastly, and most importantly, don't worry about making the best of you summer.

Don't obsess over maintaining your "Beach Bod," having a hot summer fling or proving to anyone that you have a healthy social life. Just be free. Relax and enjoy your summer how you want to enjoy your summer.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
