How To Overcome Defeat

Face Mondays with big pots of coffee and the belief that your time is now.

How To Overcome Defeat
Nathan S. Collier

Here you are again, feeling worn down and overcome with the flooding sense of defeat. Sometimes you wish a dramatic miracle would work it's way into your life and skyrocket you to your end goal, but unfortunately life doesn't work that way. Goals are achieved through effort, climbs take time and meticulous care. Results of your hard work may not be evident, but the routine will slowly take you toward your end goal.

When you're stuck in a place of monotony, it is too easy to wave your white flag. From personal experience, I can say I understand how pointless your efforts feel and how it feels like your whole being is screaming for a break. It's then you must push through. Passions are worth pursuing no matter how difficult it becomes. Great things take time and quality work requires your full dedication. Though it may seem like things will never change and your big "aha" moment is never coming, it is.

Faith must drive you forward when you're the most exhausted and drained from seemingly pointless effort after effort. You never know when your moment is coming, it could be just around the corner. Face Mondays with big pots of coffee and the belief your time is now and there is no choice but to move forward because it's worth it. Every sleepless night spent overthinking, beating yourself up, and pulling your hair out will seem minuscule when you're living out your dream to the fullest capacity.

Each successful person has a background of struggle and failure, so think of the defeat as just one more precedent to your success story. Keep dreaming wild dreams when it's the most difficult, drag your weary self out of bed and hustle toward the life you want, and force the positive attitude of grace and positivity because you deserve to be kind to yourself in the midst of disappointments. The key to your success is right in front of you, you just haven't discovered it yet. The miracle you crave is on its way, so have faith things will work out. Let defeat slide off of you and into your "done with it" bin, because you're not defeated, you never truly are. There will always be fight left within you, even if you have to dig for it. So grab your spiritual shovel and dig until you've worked yourself right out of defeat's ugly grasp.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
