There are many reasons why students choose to go to school out of state. One of the reasons I chose to go out of state was because I know my home state is where I want to spend the rest of my life. I figured that there is so much of the world, and this country, that needs to be seen so I should start exploring now.
Even though I’ve been going to school out of state for three years, homesickness still manages to creep up on me every now and then. Regardless of homesickness, I am still happy that I decided to try something new. Here's a short list of things you know to be true if you go to school out of state.
1. You use your slang from back home and get some crazy looks.
You thought everyone knew what “Slide into the DMs,” meant…guess not. Now you have to explain what that word means and make sure your friends use it in the right context in the future.
2. You cry a little on the inside when you can’t satisfy your current food craving.
Unfortunately In-N-Out, Chick-Fil-A, or whatever place you enjoy eating at is not in every state. It hurts even more when you realize that you won’t be able to taste pure deliciousness for another three months. On the brightside, ramen is cheap!
3. If you have a pet, you miss them more than anything.
Scaly, furry, or feathery your pet is one of your best buds and you feel down knowing you can’t have them cuddle up to you when you’re having a bad day. To cope with this you look at pictures of your pet and show them off to everyone, even if they seem uninterested.
4. You get out of your comfort zone and try amazing, crazy, and sometimes life changing things.
There are so many activities and places you would have never tried or seen if you didn’t go to school out of state. Now you’re happy that your temporary home has helped you find a new passion and allowed you to grow.
5. Lastly, going home is one of the best feelings in the world.
As they say, “distance makes the heart grow fonder.” When you finally go home your appreciation for everything and everyone that’s back at home increases. You never thought you’d be happy to hear cars honking, the sound of a tractor starting up, the silence of a Sunday morning, or whatever sounds inhabit Home. Nothing compares to being in your bed with some childhood mementos scattered around your room.
