Our Love-Hate Relationship With Technology

Everyone loves technology, except for when they don't.

My generation grew up with more technological advances than any before it. We took computer classes as early as first grade, grew up alongside our always-evolving cell phones, took part in the rise of social media, and have come to rely on technology in our daily lives. Although technology has certainly expedited many tasks and made the world a more aware place, there will always be times when the urge to toss our electronic devices out the window becomes intolerable.

The cell phone has become an inseparable companion for many people who find it necessary to carry at all times. Once used simply to make phone calls, the cell phone is now a powerful pocket computer that combines our watches, calendars, games, cameras, entertainment and websites into one device. We are so used to having everything at our fingertips through our cell phones that when something goes wrong with them, we essentially lose our minds.

Apps crashing without warning, unscheduled updates slowing things down, dropping your phone in water, losing connection, dropping your phone on solid ground, butt-dialing (less common nowadays), overheating, shutting down, exploding - the list goes on. It drives us insane. How dare you, cell phone.

Computers are becoming more reliable too. They keep all of our important files in one place which cuts down on our paper trails, they are capable of faster processing speeds, and you can basically find anything with a few clicks of a button. We put so much trust in them since they're basically like our best friends. Until they're not and they decide to ruin our lives.

Whether the essay you spent all night writing disappeared like magic, those vacation photos you saved fell into an abyss, you became the victim of an online hacker, or the Wi-Fi signal was too weak to stream the video, we've all shared some beautifully frustrating moments with our computers.

Let's cut the electronics some slack. It may seem hard to imagine, but there was once a time when people had to use a map to figure out where they were going before GPS. People once had to write letters by hand. Cameras didn't automatically share your pictures with all of your friends, our predecessors had to develop them from film. Research wasn't done by searching keywords into Google, instead there were huge information books called encyclopedias to dig through. We should be grateful, our modern technology brought us out of the dark ages.

There is so much to look forward to as technology continues to become more advanced. New features no one has ever dreamed of are just beyond the horizon. Even though the devices we have today are probably more than good enough, I'm sure it will be a blast trying to figure out each new feature, app and software update. Before we now it, we will have the pleasure of having our children teach us things we will never comprehend, just like we did for our elders.

Thank you, technology. We love hate you.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
