I was reading around in Hebrews the other day. I read a verse that I have always heard but I thought about it more in a different way this time.
"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf." -Hebrews 6:19-20.
When I read this, I think about sailors and their ships. Sailors have these things called anchors that are attached to their boat. Anchors are there to help the boat stay in place and not drift away. This is very useful especially during a thunderstorm. The anchor prevents the boat from drifting and not letting it become overwhelmed by heavy waves. Of course, sailors don't like to get caught up in a storm, but they always have the anchor there for when they need to use it to prevent them from drifting off.
Sometimes in life, we get the feeling that our ship might sink. We see discouraging things on the news, hear about broken hearts and broken homes, experience loss or disappointment, and much more hardship. All of this tends to weigh us down.
We start turning to other anchors that we think will make us feel better: alcohol, drugs, the wrong crowd, etc. However, all of that is temporary pleasure. Jesus does not want us to settle for temporary things that won't help us in the end. He wants us to focus on a reliable anchor for our souls: Him.
Jesus is the true anchor that will keep you steady when you're in the midst of a storm. He will help you along the way. Sailors cannot always see their anchor when it hits the ocean floor, but they trust that it is there. When the storm hits, they might be scared, but when they find out that their boat isn't drifting and the anchor was working all along, they feel so much better.
We cannot always see what God's plan is for our lives. Sometimes, it is difficult for us to trust Him in scary situations, just like a thunderstorm. However, at the end of the day, understanding that God is our true anchor is what is going to matter the most later in life. He is always there to help you. He is set. His work is finished. He is constant, and He will meet you in the midst of the storm.
