Our President Elect's Shiny-New Ideas for the "Land of the Free"

Trump's plans for his first 100 days in office may be even worse than Spongebob's decision to draw Doodlebob.

Our President Elect's Shiny-New Ideas for the "Land of the Free"
New York Daily News

Hello, fellow exhausted peoples living in America. Well, it has been a short while now that Donald Trump has become the president elect in the “land of the free.” I know that for some this is a great and exciting new venture into making our nation “Great Again.” However, I would go out on a limb and say that Americans aren't sure where the original "Great" American time period is.

We are past the opportunity to vote and past having our opinions have an impact on the President-elect. Although, people protesting the next president has been prevalent in many major cities in our country. I do not agree that our voices will no longer make an impact on how our country runs for the next four year, but for right now the best way to reach out to our new President-elect’s ear in efforts of fighting for our rights is to become educated on Donald Trump’s immediate plans for our country. “Donald Trump’s Contract With The American Voter,” is what I will be discussing, along with some future outcomes if Trump is successful in these attempts to change our country. I will touch on SOME of his ideals (there are quite a few, which I strongly recommend going through).

“Cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure”

This is definitely one of the most worrisome ideas that he has promised. The climate change program Trump refers to here, the Paris Agreement that the United States signed in April 2016, is the first universal law binding global environmental deal. The agreement is that every party (193 parties today) who signs it will see to it that their emissions keep the Earth’s average temperature below a 2 degrees celsius increase from the pre-industrialization levels. Backing out of this agreement is something I personally am very against, due to the fact that I love the planet we live on. I would also like to stop seeing pictures of sad polar bears standing on small pieces of ice, but that’s just me. I’m assuming Trump has something against polar bears.

“I will lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars’ worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.”

This is an absolutely horrendous idea from Mr. Trump towards the environment yet again, but who’s surprised? The fact that Donald does not believe in climate change, which science has consistently and infinitely backed up, is a special kind of ignorance. But this, I suppose, is something we can continue to use our voices to express. You would think that scientist’s voices might mean something to him, but it doesn't appear to do anything.

“Begin removing the more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants from the country and cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back.”

First of all I’d love to see that documentation stating clearly and accurately that 2 million illegal immigrants in America have been convicted of crimes. Also, “cancel visas to foreign countries that won’t take them back,”… so where will they go Donald? Honestly I’m thinking about beginning my own country and we will be accepting all the ‘evil criminal’ immigrants from America. Also any American who wishes to leave this situation in general.

“Suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur. All vetting of people coming into our country will be considered extreme vetting.”

Vetting, meaning a careful examination, I feel could be done. Saying there is absolutely no possible way to examine humans from another country who wish to come into America, I think is just untrue. But if we are to concentrate on our options for safe vetting, then we guess we will continue to run into these issues.

“Repeal and Replace Obamacare Act. Fully repeals Obamacare and replaces it with Health Saving Accounts, the ability to purchase health insurance across state lines, and lets states manage Medicaid funds. Reforms will also include cutting the red tape at the FDA: there are over 4,000 drugs awaiting approval, and we especially want to speed the approval of life-saving medications.”

The idea of Health Saving Accounts does sound good on paper. A health care program with lower premiums and higher deductibles means you would pay a lower annual fee with a more expensive payment when going into get medical assistance. Although, predicting how this health care system will affect each class is hard to say. Trump's ever-changing stance on issues will definitely play a role in how this Health Savings Account idea is implemented.

Trump's view on the FDA isn't the greatest when looking from a safety standpoint. Although it is possible that there are drugs which could be released and used to save lives, though lowering the bar this increases the possibility for dangerous drugs to enter society. Talk of lowering the standard of food inspection is also in Trump's game plan... which I find quite scary. I think people deserve and should know exactly what is in the food they're putting into their bodies; this would hinder this possibility.

ALTHOUGH, keep in mind that this is all subject to change at Trumps any whim. The odds of Trump carrying out these plans exactly as stated, just one month ago, is pretty unlikely. He has already turned back on his word in small ways (for example, saying "the wall" he will but up between America and Mexico may only actually be a fence). To learn of the most recent details of Trump's opinions, (which by the time you read this may no longer be the most recent information) I would recommend watching his interview on 60 minutes which aired November 13th. I look forward to seeing where Donald Trump's unrealistic and radical ideas will take us in the future...hopefully to a brighter tomorrow than stated within his '100 Day Plan.'

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
