A little mini camping vacation? How could anyone pass that up!? On short notice my boyfriend and I planned a little "middle-of-week", weekend vacation at K.O.A Gettysburg campground. My boyfriend is an Eagle scout and has been on several camping adventures with the scouts since the age of ten! He has traveled the entire Pennsylvania, Maryland, and North Virginia line, he would go on trips every couple of weekends.. He tells me all the time how unbelievably beautiful the places were, especially the stars. He has even traveled through the Virginia Segment of the Appalachian trail in the middle of February with his boyscout troop. You could probably imagine how extremely frigid the temperatures dropped to at night. My boyfriend told me that it would snow and they would have to dig themselves out of the tent! BRRRRRRR!!!! I can NOT even imagine being out in a tent those freezing temperatures like that for a whole weekend. He has told me that he would non stop shiver all through the night, nothing would keep him warm. My family was very thankful to have him on our very first family, week long camping trip that we had back in August. I had no doubt that he would make sure we were in good shape for our very own little mini camping trip.
The night before we went shopping for all of our grocery items and other miscellaneous items we would need for our trip. My boyfriend had all of our meals planned out. Our first night there we had a pre prepped pizza roll that we used a pizza crust and put pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella (and a lot of it),and pepperonis then you roll it up and put it in tin foil then you throw it in the fire! The directions say that fifteen minutes on each side would do the trick. We waited and checked it severals time while also ripping the tin foil many, many times. After about an hour and a half we were tired of waiting and just ate it as it. It wasn't horrible but it also wasn't the best thing I had ever eaten, luckily for me I filled myself up on smores (with absolutely no regrets!
The next morning we started off with a blueberry cinnabon recipe that you make in the dutch oven, you first start off with a sugar and corn starch mixture with water and a pint of blueberries, you put them in the dutch oven until the mixture is thickened. While the mixture was on the fire we walked up to the camp store to grab a few things and by the time we got back the mixture was just a big glop of goop. Fortunately for us we still had the cinnabons to make. They seemed like they took forever to make so we ended up cooking some on a stick in the fire until the other ones were made were done.
That day we decided to go out into the town of Gettysburg, which isn't really that new to us, we live about an hour away so when we don't have anything to do it is usually our go to place. We decided to go to Dobbins House Tavern, he has never been before but I have probably gone a hand full of times. Then for dessert at Kilwins for some icecream!! Then for dinner we had delicious tacos in a bag. We ended our trip with some good ole playing on the playground and swinging on the swings. It was a great trip and it was sad to see it end but I'm glad to be home in my own bed.
