Our Flag Stands For Freedom And What It Is Worth

Our flag is constantly being lowered because we forgot to stand for ourselves

I have held a gun. I have shot a gun.

I have closed one eye as fear swept over me knowing I was about to pull the trigger and release a bullet that could potentially kill an innocent being.

I can remember sweating bullets as I pointed the gun at a target to shoot and thinking “What if something goes wrong?” Luckily, I never had any mishaps, but what if I did?

My heart aches for not only the innocent victims of all the recent shootings but also the sad mentally ill people who took their lives. I also hurt for the ones who have taken the lives of others and feel absolutely nothing inside when they shot the gun. It terrified me to even hold a gun, much less possibly taking someone's life. They are trying to get the help they need. How are they supposed to get better when they reach out for guidance and are turned away because they are mentally sick?

Our flag stands for freedom and what it is worth. Our country has been fighting for freedom as long as it has been standing. Brave men and women give up their lives, so we can live ours as we wish. They fly overseas not knowing if they will even make it back to the states, so we can do what...live our selfish lives and protest about how we want this and that done differently?

Our country has turned into an unsafe place to live and honestly makes me wonder how our flag is still standing at all.

I work at a mall; a place where people come to shop or walk and relieve some stress; a place that like school, people shouldn’t fear. As I was taking the trash out one night, I noticed the flag that was lowered, and I began to tremble. Immediately, I hurt for all the Florida shooting victims. I hurt for the Kentucky school shooting victims. I took a second to remember how many innocent lives our country has lost this year and then I became truly scared for my family, my country, and myself.

There is a gun problem. There is a mental illness problem. There is a people problem.

Yes, we need prayers and God. No doubt gun laws need to be stricter. But more importantly, the citizens of the United States of America need to act. We need to take action and hold up our flag that men and women fight to honor every day. I don’t want to see our flag lowered and know it is because innocent people have been killed.

We are constantly facing a controversy about people refusing to stand in front of the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem…how can you blame them?

Aren’t they more honest with themselves than those of us who stand and “honor” the flag meant to stand for freedom…when clearly we don’t even believe freedom exists. We need to start being honest with ourselves and realize there is a much bigger problem than gun control and it’s going to take a united nation to solve the problem amongst our nation divided.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
