As everyone probably knows Hurricane Matthew has been a devastating storm for several places. There has been so much death in Haiti and the Caribbean. So many places have been or still are under water. Hundreds of thousands of people are out of power as of Saturday, Oct. 8. Unfortunately the nation's oldest established city has been one of the places in Florida that has been hit the hardest. Pieces of A1A have been destroyed. Trees are down all over town. The sign to the fort has even floated away downtown.
The college that has become my second home has been flooded with several feet of water on Friday. Some residents of St. Augustine have been allowed to return this past weekend and residents of Anastasia might be allowed to return later on. However, the college has still advised for people to not return today even though it has been announced that the city can have people return. The college is busy cleaning up and waiting to have power restored. I am so torn.
On one hand I can't wait to return. On the other hand, who knows what it is that I am going to be returning to. The St. Augustine community has been devastated, and there is a lot of work that needs to be done to return our fair city to its former glory. If we all work together we can do it. In this time of sorrow and healing we all need each other. I just hope that when everyone returns we can all turn this trial into something that has brought the community closer together.
