ABC's "Once Upon A Time" concluded its seven year run in May of 2018. The end of this show was controversial and divided the community of Oncers (the fanbase for the show). Many of the Oncers thought the show should have ended in season six, while others (including myself) thought that the show should have kept going past season seven.
I, like many others in the fan base, believed that the show's reboot had potential. When we found out that the show was going to be canceled after the seventh season, we felt a whole range of emotions.
At first, I didn't believe it was true, so I went on Twitter to see the creator's tweets. After I figured it out, I was both sad and angry. I didn't want to believe it. I had been obsessed with this show since I had been 13 through its end when I was twenty. This show portrayed hope and gave an escape from the reality that is our society.
Season seven of the show was a reboot from the past six seasons. When I found out that the show was ending after the seventh season, I felt like season seven wasn't going to be as great as it could have been. To me, season seven felt rushed.
The storyline started slow. It was confirmed that the show was ending around the middle of the season. The filming of the show, however, was over halfway done. That meant that the last few weeks were going to be way rushed.
This show shouldn't have been cancelled. It was a sign of hope for many, and it taught the Oncers life lessons that you don't see in everyday life. It also was one of the best shows on television recently. It wasn't another cop, medical, sitcom, reality, etc. type show. It was innovative and creative in all ways. It twisted the classic fairytales we all know and love and made them something almost anyone can relate to.
The seventh season reboot could have gone for another two or three, or even more, seasons. The storyline was perfect to continue. There was so much potential for the story to continue and develop.
Now, I am not going to say that the series finale episodes were disappointing because they tied everything together well. However, the ending plot was weird and at times, difficult to follow. I think had the creators had more time to develop a series finale, be it another season or just more notice about the end, the ending would have been even more amazing.
This show for me was an obsession. It brought me out of reality for an hour each week to escape the hardships I was facing and gave me hope that one day I could fix what was wrong in my life if I believed. This show meant so much to me and thousands of other people around the world. I wish this show was still airing, but at least it is on Netflix, so I can at least binge watch the episodes to get that feeling, though I have seen all the seasons too many times to count. Thank you Eddy and Adam for creating the wonderful world that was Storybrooke, Maine where anyone could visit to escape from their reality.
