If you didn't know, the Oscar Nominations were announced early on Tuesday, January 22nd by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross. The Oscars will most likely be held this year without a host, something that hasn't happened since 1989, on February 24.
The Academy has yet to announce its plans, although there have been lots of speculations including a Marvel round of hosts presenting.
"Black Panther" made history as the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture and has a total of seven nominations. "Roma" was nominated for Best Picture, something rarely accomplished by a Foreign Film, and received 10 nominations in total. Spike Lee received a nomination for Best Director for the first time. "The Favourites" leads, along with "Roma" for most nominations with 10.
Emily Blunt wasn't nominated for "Mary Poppins," Bradley Cooper was not nominated for Best Director, "If Beale Street Could Talk" did not receive a Best Picture Nomination, "Eighth Grade" received no nominations, and "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" also received no nominations.
Personally, I feel like the most talked about films ended up not being as nominated as predicted such as "A Star Is Born" (which hasn't done as well this award season as predicted).
This award season has felt a little different with unpredictable wins at the Emmys and Golden Globes and some expected nominations being "snubbed." So maybe this year, it will be even harder to predict the winners especially Best Picture, which in recent years has gone against predictions.
Now if you are looking for a little help in predicting Best Picture, most years, the Producers Guild of America Awards helps predict the Oscar winners. On January 18, "Green Book" was awarded Best Film.
So time will tell if "Green Book," which also won the Golden Globe, will come out as the Best Picture. But it might be the best bet.
