Did the Golden Globes switch up the Oscars race?

Now that we are in 2017, the award season has officially begun. This was kicked off on Sunday, January 8th with the Golden Globe Awards. This honors the best in film and television, but with the Oscar nominations being announced on January 24th, this award ceremony was a crucial part of who is getting nominated for the Academy Awards.

The Golden Globes branches out into two categories of film- Drama and Comedy/Musical. The Comedy/Musical category was obviously dominated by "La La Land." It was nominated for a total of six Golden Globes, and won in every category, including Best Comedy/Musical film. This is very impressive and is very telling for the Oscars race. It is the clear favorite to win Best Picture at the Oscars, and I can also see it winning Best Director, Best Score, and Best Original Song, among other awards it could possibly be nominated for.

As for the acting categories, there were two winners for the Drama category, and two winners for Comedy/Musical. There were also Best Supporting Actor and Actress, but they were combined between the two categories. For the Comedy/Musical category, those were won by the two leading roles in "La La Land," Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. For Drama, Casey Affleck won for "Manchester by the Sea" and Isabelle Hupert won for the French film "Elle." For the supporting roles, Viola Davis won for "Fences" and Aaron Taylor-Johnson for "Nocturnal Animals."

I have my predictions set up for the Leading Actor and Actress category for the Oscars, this is what I think:

Best Actor: Casey Affleck ("Manchester by the Sea"), Ryan Gosling ("La La Land"), Denzel Washington ("Fences"), Andrew Garfield ("Hacksaw Ridge"), Joel Edgerton ("Loving").

Best Actress: Emma Stone ("La La Land"), Amy Adams ("Arrival"), Meryl Streep ("Florence Foster Jenkins"), Isabelle Hupert ("Elle"), Natalie Portman ("Jackie").

I personally think Casey Affleck is a shoe-in to the Oscar for Best Actor with his emotional performance in "Manchester by the Sea." Ryan Gosling could give him a race, but I am pretty positive the Oscar is going to Affleck and righteously so. The race for Best Actress is a more competitive race. Amy Adams has been nominated for five Oscars and has never won, and she gave a great performance in the film "Arrival." I personally would like to see Natalie Portman or Emma Stone win. It is too close to pick a definite winner!

For Best Picture, I definitely think "La La Land" has great potential of winning the biggest award of the night. However, "Moonlight" won the Golden Globe for Best Film- Drama. Personally, I would rather see "Moonlight" win Best Picture, it was a beautiful film and I predict that Mahershala Ali will win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. But it isn't that likely with all of the buzz and success around "La La Land."

Keep an eye out, the SAG Awards and the BAFTA Awards are approaching, which can also influence the Oscars race. The big night is February 26th, we will see what happens from now until then!

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
