It's that time of year again. You know which one I am talking about, freshmen move in day! (cue scary movie sounds). If you are getting flashbacks, you probably remember chaos. Just imagine a zombie movie where hordes of monsters come to eat your face off. Wait, that's not how you remember it? Well, maybe that's because you had an orientation leader. You might think that orientation leaders are not important, but they really are. Orientation leaders are able to ward off zombies while keep everyone calm and collected. They are valued and important for the orientation process. Could your orientation happen without them? That's a good question, is the head of your student activities office an octopus? Of course not! Leader play an essential part, they are the eyes and ears of the whole operation.
*Note I am not making a comparison between freshmen and zombies.
Orientation leaders are volunteers who have a passion for their fellow students. They want to pass on their college experiences with the individuals that will shape their own. Orientation leaders put in long hours to provide freshmen with a positive experience.
A common misconception about orientation leaders is that they are above you. This misconception couldn't be further from the truth. Leadership does not mean you are better. To be a leader is to go the extra mile. Orientation leaders are students just like you, have experienced what you will, and just want to be a resource that you can rely on.
Orientation leaders play many parts. A leader will be your confidant, your resource for whatever ails you and someone you can inspire to be. Leaders will complete tedious tasks in order for you to have the supplies that you need for a successful orientation. They will wake up bright and early and go to bed late at night. They will perform monotonous tasks until they are perfect. They are creators, producers, actors, and directors.
Orientation leaders value their position and realize that they are a not just a leader, but a role model, a reliable resource and a life changer. I was told by the head of my student activities office that you will always be someone's orientation leader. This is true! A leader's job does not end when orientation does. Once an orientation leader gains the title, they will keep it forever. Orientation leaders are always going be there for you and help you to become your best self. The work that they do should be appreciated. They wear many masks so you don't have to. Orientation leaders are the reason why you don't have to fear orientation (the zombie apocalypse). So next time you see your orientation leader, try to tell them how they have helped you. Try to be patient and understanding and go into orientation with a positive attitude. Never forget the lessons that your leader taught you can be valuable throughout your education.
