Organize Your Job Search

11

If you’re like me, you’ve done extensive research on hundreds of potential employers. You’ve read about the best ways to respond to the most common interview questions, you know how to employ good body language in person, and you may even know the right colored outfit to wear that exudes confidence. But there’s one thing that all of this job-related research has lead you to: disorganization. With all of the company mission statements, clients, values, interview questions, and connections flying around in my head, the job search is exhausting and can end up getting you seriously confused or burnt out. Thank goodness for the Internet that has provided a relief for our problem once again. Enter Huntsy—an online resource that helps you “stalk your next job like an expert hunter.”I thought I would give Huntsy a test run to see if it’s as much of a lifesaver as it sounds. Right now in my job search, this is exactly what I need.
The coolest thing about Huntsy, in my opinion, is the convenience of storing and organizing open job positions. Similar to Pinterest, you can download the Huntsy extension onto your desktop so that when you find a job opening all you have to do is click the Huntsy icon and it will send the job posting to your Huntsy profile.
Additionally, Huntsy enables you to connect with your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ accounts. Once you connect your social network accounts, Huntsy will tell you if you have any contacts and connections within the company so that you can utilize them as a reference.
When you log in to your Huntsy account, you have a dashboard page of today’s tasks and a calendar of your upcoming events. Then you can snooze the task, mark it as complete, or archive it.
When you add a job to your profile, you then have the capability to share the job listing, apply for the job, schedule an interview, add notes, add a task, and add a contact. Upon applying, Huntsy will even send you reminders to follow up and send thank-you notes.
My only critique is that the website encourages you to send your generic resume and cover letter. You’re instructed to upload your resume and additional documents onto your profile, but most professionals will advise that you alter your resumes and cover letters to appeal to the specific company you are applying to. Having a generic cover letter is your first-class ticket to the recycling bin.
Overall, organization is key to successfully finding the right job for you. There are hundreds of great opportunities, but it’s easy to get lost in the chaos of the job search. Use tools like Huntsy to get organized so that you can devote your full attention to the actual application and interview.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
