Why Oregon State University Will Make You Hate Summer

No matter how much you love your hometown, it will happen.

Why Oregon State University Will Make You Hate Summer

Growing up, summer was always this incredible time when school was finally out, and the biggest worry that you had for a few months was which local pool to go to for the day or what you were having for dinner. You wait and wait for nine months for the so-called best time of the year. And sure, back then, it was inarguably just that: the best time of the year.

But then things changed. A group of probably the coolest people that you might ever know made the best decision any of us have yet to make and chose to come to college at Oregon State University.

And let me tell you, Oregon State University will make you hate summer.

Whether you go to Oregon State and just want to reminisce or you go somewhere else and are wondering what all of the hype of Beaver nation is about, here are some of the reasons why Oregon State will make it tremendously difficult to part ways for the summer.

DAM JAM

Honestly, what other school is going to make all of our middle school selves' dreams come true and bring T-Pain to campus for a concert for $7? It must be kind of cool compared to other schools because it seems to attract plenty (probably more than we would like) of UofO and out-of-state school kids.

Campus

This can sometimes be taken for granted, but our campus is incredibly beautiful and well-designed. And for as big as Oregon State is, everything is so close together; you can easily make it all the way from Peavy to Owen in no more than 10 minutes, and the walk down Campus Way with huge trees lining the sides or through the gorgeous MU Quad makes the walk even better. No matter the time you spend, here you come to fall in love with our campus, especially if you take a trip down to that other Oregon state school down I5 and compare our stunning campus to that.

Shasta

Sure, other schools have similar traditions with their own Shasta weekends, but in reality, ours absolutely diminishes other schools' weekends. For one weekend during spring term, all of the Greek houses and non-Greek affiliated come together and board around 60 house boats cramped onto one island. Everyone is welcome on everyone's boats, and it is pretty much three days of rooftop dancing, wiping out on clay-smothered rocks, and more burgers and hot dogs than you will ever want to eat again.

Monroe

The best street in Corvallis. One central place with Cheesy Stuffed, Qdoba, Thai Chili, American Dream, and so many more. How can you beat that?

The People

And lastly, more than anything else, the friends we have all found here, the best people we might ever meet, make the separation for the summer a million times more difficult. Because it is much harder to yell "GO BEAVS" and get an immediate response of "GO BEAVS" back outside of the best college town in the country.

So, no matter how much you love your hometown, I am telling you very honestly that you will begin to hate summer for the separation that it draws between you and Oregon State University.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
