Operation: Alone Time

What happens when a social person spends time alone?

9

Many of you, including myself, read Casey Robbins' awesome article entitled "The Freedom I Found In Being Alone". After reading what she has to say about being on her own, I was inspired to try "being alone" in my own life. Over the course of the past few years I have found that spending time on my own doesn't really happen anymore. While I love the people I am spending my time with, I realize that there is value in being comfortable with yourself without those many loving people around. So, for the past two weeks I have made an intentional effort to spend time by myself doing things that I would normally do with others, or wouldn't normally do at all.

Here are the rules:

- I couldn't take another person along.

- I had to do something that I had never done by myself.

- I had to spend at least 30 minutes doing each activity no matter how much I hated it or how uncomfortable I was.

So here we go...

1. I went to the movies.

I had never been to a movie by myself before this moment in my life. It has always seemed like it would be strange to walk up to the counter and say "ticket for one please!"

2. I went to a sit down dinner, without a date.

When I am going to have to eat dinner I alone, I either go through a drive-through or I stay home. I would have NEVER gone to a sit-down place and requested a table for one. If I thought movies alone would be awkward, dinner alone would be a thousand times worse.

3. I read a book at the park.

The park is commonly reserved for family outings or play dates with my dog and others. But not this time! This time is a was a date for me and my book.

4. I went to the Wildlife Refuge and took a hike.

Usually going to the refuge involves someone who knows where they are going (usually my boyfriend). But not today! Today I hit the trails on my own and attempted to not get lost.

5. I attempted to bake a cake.

Anyone who knows me knows that my baking experiences only take place when I am with my best friend, Katie, the master chef in our group. So to try and make something that didn't come out of a box on my own was daunting.

6. I went to a spin class.

Technically, I wasn't alone... but I didn't know anyone in the class and it was super early in the morning and it was something I had never tried but always wanted to!

7. I took a day trip.

I couldn't go far due to lack of funds and time, but I did make it to Oklahoma City!

8. I watched the sunrise.

I am NOT a morning person, most of my friends aren't morning people, my boyfriend isn't a morning person. It's been a long time since I've seen a sunrise and I don't know that I've ever seen one intentionally or alone. Usually I was on a bus headed to a track meet... So I did it intentionally AND alone for the first time!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
