An Open Letter To My Parents

You guys will never know how much I love you.

An Open Letter To My Parents
Cameron Ford

Dear Mom and Dad,

There is no way that one letter could even begin to thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for me. But, here it goes.

First, I want you guys to know that I appreciate you just being there for me — in the past and still now. All of the school plays, spelling bees, piano recitals (man, I hated those), tennis matches, basketball games and so much more; you always did everything you could to be there and to support me.

I will never forget all of these events from my childhood and high school years, partly because they were good experiences and good memories, but mostly because when I think back on these events, I remember you guys being there. You have always supported me through everything, and I am so thankful for that.

In addition to just coming to my events and games, you also wanted to know exactly what I was doing during the day, where I was, who I was with, the whole deal (especially you, Mom). And let me tell you, it drove me crazy in high school. I mean, was it really necessary to follow me to school every day when I started driving? But now, I really do appreciate that you guys wanted to protect me and know what I was up to. All the time.

Because now when something happens in my life, good or bad, you are the first ones I call. I like and find comfort in keeping you in the loop, because you always listen, give the best advice, and know exactly what's best for me. Also, if you don't text me during the day and ask where I am and what I'm doing, I get worried. Still.

Next, thank you so much for always making sure I have the very best of everything I need. I don't think I thank you guys enough for this. Thank you for making sure I went to a high school that would prepare me for college, and, now, thank you for making sure I am at a university I like and where I am getting a good education that will prepare me for the real world.

I am forever grateful for you, and there's no way I could ever repay you, nor would you want me to repay you. Because that's the kind of people you are. Even if you have to make sacrifices, you make sure I always have what I need.

Finally, thank you for showing me what great parents truly are. You have always supported me, no matter what, you taught me right from wrong, and somehow you became my two best friends. I know sometimes people will say that your parents shouldn't be your friends, but I think I disagree.

You never tried to be my friends, but as I grew up and learned that you really do have my best interest in mind, we became best friends. And now you're the first ones I go to when I want to celebrate, when I'm angry or when I just need a good time and a couple of laughs.

Now as a junior in college, I know you still are here for me and support me no matter what. Although we don't get to see each other every day and you can't be here for every second of my life anymore, I find so much comfort in knowing that you still support me and believe in me and pray for me. I know as I make bigger decisions in life — my career, my future husband, where to live — that you will support me no matter what.

So, Mom and Dad, thank you for everything. I hope you know how much your little girl loves you.

Love,

Your Daughter

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
