An Open Letter To My Big Sister

We have our differences but we love each other. I swear.

An Open Letter To My Big Sister

I read all these different online articles about big sisters that are so sweet they're almost cringeworthy. To be honest, I find it really hard to relate to them. Yes, my sister is the greatest gift my parents could ever give me but it's not because we are the same person. It's not because we have all the same interests or because we love everything about each other. We are eons apart from being alike in any way and that makes our relationship all the more special. I have so many things to thank her for but it has nothing to do with her helping me develop my music tastes or books I read. Because we are different, we were able to learn from each other in way that are unique. This is for sisters who are different because being different is okay.

1. Thank you for playing endless pranks on me.

I absolutely hate getting tricks played on me and you know that. But now when other people do it, I'm a little nicer to them because I've had so much practice trying to keep my patience with you.

2. Thank you for teaching me how to be patient.

Every time we didn't agree on something, we had to work together to reach a consensus. You've taught me what it means to work together with someone and how to be okay with losing fights sometimes. (But you know that I was right AT LEAST 25% of the time.)

3. Thank you for showing me how to be badass.

Being able to watch you own everything you do (specifically when you would steal the show with your dance moves at every rave you went to) really shows me how to be confident. Confidence is not something I inherently have, considering I would rather stay in and read five books than go out for the night. So I'm thankful to see you raise your head high and be proud of who you are.

4. Thank you for always having strong opinions about my life.

Our outlooks on life are pretty different and I'm not always compliant when it comes to your advice. Yet you never stop giving it. And in the end, even though I'm not happy about it, I never stop listening to you. Listening is usually a good decision.

5. Thank you for listening to me rave about all the things I love, even though you don't care about them yourself.

It really lets me know you care about me. Even if your eyes do glaze over half-way into the conversation, you still hang around a listen. That means a lot.

6. Thank you for being my body guard.

When that girl stole my jacket my freshman year of high school, you ripped it off her body before she could even breath a full breath. You're my hero!

7. Thank you for putting up with my crazy friends.

We think you are the most amazing human and we love you Danielle (DMAR). We even named our group chat after you! We know you love us, even if you act like we're all dorks. We're your dorks and that's what matters.

8. Thank you for being there for me, even if you didn't understand what was going on.

When I'm bed-ridden and crying about fictional characters, you drag me out of the house and bring me to the mall. Shopping fixes everything.

9. Thank you for always trying to protect me from the world.

When anything bad would happen or something you knew would definitely upset me, you did everything you could to help me stay in my happy little bubble. You were and are a big part of the reason I'm happy everyday.

10. Thank you for loving me endlessly.

Despite all of our differences and fights, I know you'll always be there to catch me if I fall. You are the most amazing, smart and beautiful person I know and I love you endlessly.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
