Dear SeaWorld,
In the wake of your recent decision, I’d like to say a few things on behalf of all animal rights advocates and each and every creature that you have tortured. Don’t worry, I won’t go too hard on you.
SeaWorld, we are so thankful that you came to the decision to ban the breeding of orca whales. Furthermore, we could not be happier that you will no longer include these precious, intelligent creatures in any theatrical performance. This is a big step for you, and we are exceptionally grateful.
We commend your dedication to marine life and your newly added "educational" perspective to your parks. We also are aware of your shift in priorities. Rather than neglecting these creatures, you are now publicly partnering with an outstanding organization, the Humane Society of the United States. We assure you that these changes are not going unnoticed.
However, SeaWorld, I can't help but wonder what exactly it was that drove you to make such a vast decision. I mean, come on, you have been nothing short of ruthless since the very beginning. For years, you kept up this image of genuinely caring for these animals. The picture you painted appeased the public eye. But behind the curtain, you have truly acted like monsters, treating these magnificent creatures like moneymakers.
So, why stop now? Why the sudden end to orca breeding and capturing? Could it be the noticeable decline in sales after the wonderful documentary, Blackfish, was released? Were you nervous that the public knew too much? As I recall, you had no participation in the film and refused commentary when asked. So, why are you acting as if you care now?
Maybe I'm no killer whale expert, however, I don't think a new tank design is going to fool the animals, nor the public. This whole "naturalistic" approach is almost pathetic.
Also, we appreciate that you're now paying extra attention to the health and exercise of the killer whales. But it just doesn't add up to me why that was never considered to begin with.
Lastly, I have to talk about someone who, thanks to your establishment, was entirely stripped of his innocence: Tilikum. Taken from his natural environment at a young age, Tilikum has only ever been exposed to a life in captivity, forcing to perform against his will. He is currently 34-years-old and is not expected to live for much longer. In a video released on your website, Tilikum's latest condition was explained. Unfortunately, he is suffering due to a chronic bacterial infection of his lungs. One trainer reported that he is not optimistic about Tilikum's future. Our hearts are with Tilikum at this stage of his life.
So, SeaWorld, basically what I'm saying is thank you but it's not enough. This process had to start somewhere, but if these animals had been left alone to live within their natural environment, none of this would have happened. We hope to see changes like this in the near future.
Sincerely,
An advocate for the voiceless
