Open Up Your Mind

Changing the world, starts with you.

Open Up Your Mind
Julianne Wood

Growing up we are only introduced to the world our parents have created until we develop the independence and intelligence to discover our own opinions and views. For some our views may reflect our parents', for others they may be drastically different. For me, mine have took a completely different turn from my family's in some aspects, as for most of of us. Times change, the world grows as do our minds. Lately it seems the world is growing at a pace most of our minds can't keep up with.

I once heard that the first thought/reaction we have to a situation is what we were trained to think, but our second thought following our first reflects our personal opinions/thoughts. At first this did not make much sense to me but the older I get the more I agree with the idea. It's natural to jump the gun and judge the situation we are in or individual we are interacting with, that is just another flaw that makes us human.

For some it's difficult to not to be judgmental in a situation you may not understand. The first step to opening up your mind is to first realize that for most of us, we are quick to judge something we do not understand. Ranging from a grumpy cashier at the grocery store to an individual who is shouting racist slurs to another. (Unfortunately there are much, much larger issues all around the world we need to start here at home to make a change.) When you find yourself in situations like these, it's important to train your brain to remember that the cashier may just be having a bad day and needs a smile and a good laugh.

When it comes to situations such as racism, sexism, bigotry I do not have any understanding as to why people take part in them. With my lack of understanding, rather than being judgmental to these individuals I try to spread love, in any way I can to those who accept and welcome it. For those who do not accept it, turn your head and spread it to those who do. It makes me incredibly happy that so many of us have the patience and strong hearts to continuously spread love and support in today's society.

I've never seen an individual for their skin tone, for their mistakes, for their tattoos on their body, for their culture, for their God. I have seen an individual for intentions, their laughter, their respect for themselves and others, their dreams, their support. We are each unique beings that are apart of the same species on the same planet. We are beautiful, we are all important, we each have something to offer to the world.

There is never a need to judge someone for their mistakes, you've made mistakes you will never be proud of, a design of flower permanently embedded into one's skin does and will not ruin the ability to be a professional or a good person, and we each have our own world under which all have their own God to protect them. The idea of opening up your mind does not just refer to everyday things like trying something new on the menu at lunch, but to bigger picture issues. Learning to understand and accept an individual, a way of life, a way of love, a way of thought will lead you to a more fulfilling, successful life.

Now, in this time of frustration and bigotry, remember how important it is to open up your mind and spread a little love to those that lack it, come together and support one another before we destroy ourselves. Teach others the importance in opening up your mind. With this mindset we can change the world, and that starts at home. (For those who have their doubts look up the 'Butterfly Effect'.)

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
