I Appreciate You More Than I Can Say

I know sometimes it may not seem like it, but I don't know where I would be without you mom.

I Appreciate You More Than I Can Say
Kyra Debevits

You have been there for me through everything. From my first steps to learning how to drive and everything in between. I know we fight sometimes and I might not seem like I appreciate you enough, but I really do. So I want to thank you for everything you do for me.

Thank you for the constant advice.

From outfit choices to finances you truly give the best advice. While I might not always admit it, your advice is what has gotten me through life thus far. Not a day goes by that I don't use some form of advice you have given me over the years.

Thank you for listening.

When I have a bad day and just need to vent, I always have you. Thank you for lending a listening ear to every problem I have. Whether it be work or the professor who I constantly think has it out for me, thank you for simply listening to me. I appreciate that beyond words.

Thank you for your truthfulness.

No matter what, you always tell me the truth. You aren't afraid to tell me when I'm screwing up, or when I've made a bad decision. You aren't afraid to tell me when an outfit makes me look fat. It's this truthfulness that shows me that I can always go to you. Thank you for always telling me what I NEED to hear, not always what I WANT to hear.

Thank you for always believing in me.

No matter what it is that I am doing, you always have complete faith in me. It is so encouraging to know that I always have your confidence in me in whatever I do.

Thank you for your strength.

You mom, are the strongest woman I know. Over the years I've watched as you've struggled to make ends meet, and yet you always did so with a smile. Watching you taught me that having faith and not giving up are the keys to success.

Thank you for your time.

You are a busy woman. Yet you always make time for me. Thank you for constantly being there to answer the phone when I have a problem, or being there for me when I'm homesick and just need my mom.

Thank you for always being there for me.

No matter what it is you are always there for me. If I call you at 6:00 in the morning because my boyfriend broke up with me I know you will answer. If I am too scared to go to the doctor by myself still, I know you will drop everything and still go with me. I appreciate how much you care about me so much.

But most of all, thank you for being my best friend.

From shopping to cooking to tasting new wines, you are always down to do anything I want to do. I learn so much from you every time I am in your presence. You are such a kind hearted woman. I wouldn't be half the woman I am today if it weren't for you. I know it may not seem like it sometimes, but I really do appreciate you mom. This letter does no justice to the amount of appreciation I have for you, but I want you to know that I love you with all my heart. I hope I'm at least half the mother that you are someday.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
