An Open Thank You Letter To My Dad

Dad, you've always been there for me and I admire your effort and the love you have for everyone around you. It's not always easy being the dad to a daughter, let alone five. And in case you haven't heard it lately, you're doing a pretty good job.

Thank you for always coming home. This may seem like a silly thing to say, but in reality, we're really lucky.

Thank you for showing me what it means to work hard. I've never seen anybody work quite as hard as you. I know it takes a toll on you mentally and physically, but you're teaching silent lessons. I can see the rewards and it may seem like never ending work, but you're teaching us an invaluable lesson.

Thank you for being my biggest supporter. From my coach to my number one fan on the sidelines. I could always count on you to have faith in me and show up to all my games, even if it was the night before opening day.

Thank you for setting the bar high. Watching how you treat the ones around with kindness and love has shown me exactly what I want from a partner. You'll always be the first man I loved and it'll take a lot to come close.

Thank you for always being my Valentine when I didn't have one. Just a card and some chocolates always told me that I was loved.

Thank you for pushing me, even when I didn't know I could go further. You want me to succeed and to be the best I can be and I thank you for that.

Thank you for teaching me how to ride a bike. I used to love wheeling around the drive way and traveling to all of your races. Riding a bike seems like a small step you take in your childhood, but I'm glad that you took that step with me.

Thank you for showing me how much a small gesture can mean so much to someone. Even when you don't think I'm paying attention, I am. A small act of kindness can go a long way.

Thank you for spending time with me. I appreciate all the time you take out of your day to spend with me. Whether it's watching a TV show or playing a game of cards or taking a walk, it's always nice to be around you. I know I'm not home as often, so any time counts.

And thank you for being my hero.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
