I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of The Olympics and Team USA. When both the winter and summer games roll around, you can usually find myself glued to the TV or spitting off random facts about the games and their athletes. But when it comes to the off-season for the games, I’m usually just trying to increase my collection of Olympic apparel and accessories (like a hat from the 2002 games in Salt Lake or my all-time favorite shirt from the 2004 games in Athens). With that all being said here are a few open letters to both the athletes and the games.
I’d like to start my “letters” the same way the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Games started, with the opening ceremonies.
1. Dear Pyeongchang’s Opening Ceremonies,
It’s a hard list to break, but you’ve landed in my top 3 for opening ceremonies. I almost woke up at 5 AM for you (emphasis on almost), but I value my sleep maybe too much. You had me fooled when the Olympians started to walk in and the lights on the seats made it look like no one was there, funny one. How much time on the stair stepper did the women from the Korean Women’s Ice Hockey Team (one from North and one from South Korea which is groundbreaking) have it do in preparation for the games. I’m guessing a lot of time with the thigh-blaster level. I think I can say for both my mom and I that we were thoroughly impressed with the thousands of drones used because it was magical.
Sincerely,
The girl who wants to stand in the middle showing people where to walk while dancing my heart out
2. Dear athletes,
Shaun White, since we share the same name, although it’s spelled differently, I just want to know why you had to do me like that when you cut all of your hair off. Now how am I supposed to refer to you as, because it’s no longer “the snowboarder with the hella long red hair”? I thought Sean/Shaun’s were supposed to stick together.
Chloe Kim, I think all of the millennial’s out there can agree that you are an inspiration. You have showed us that you can live tweet about wanting ice cream seconds before your race starts and still win gold. With that logic I think I’m going to start doing the same but for school exams. I think it’ll work.
Adam Rippon, you my friend are hilarious. I couldn’t tell if it was the best or worst advice when you said that everyone should try to go the Olympics. As a 20 going on 21 year old, I think it’s a little late for me to get started in a sport and make it to the games, but thanks for the slight hope. You have landed in my top 5 people I follow on Twitter, after Chrissy Teigan of course.
Sincerely,
A fan cheering you on from home
3. Dear speed skaters from The Netherlands,
Please just give everyone else a chance you speed demons.
Sincerely,
The other speed skaters that want to get a medal at some point in their lives.
4. Finally, Dear Team USA and the Olympics as a whole,
Thank you for giving me something to look forward to every 2 years. Never before have I had something to be thoroughly passionate and obsessive about. My only hope is that one-day I will be able to see the games in person and not just through my TV on specific hours as a rerun and not live. To the athletes, may you never stop striving and pushing yourself to be the best of the best while also having some fun. May you continue to thrive as much as the games have in past years.
With love,
A girl who just wants to work for you and become a part of Team USA
My final two questions for the Olympics are: If I go to the gym now can I join the Bobsled team in a few years? And, how cute is the mascot, Soohorang?
