Most of us have been there before, the dreaded roommate talk during college. You either make a friend before you begin school and pray you will work out as roommates, or if you're 95% of the population you wing it with a randomly selected roommate and pray for the best. I have had the pleasure of having 4 different random roommates who have all taught me a different lesson.
My freshman year I had two different roommates, we lived in an apartment style dorm room. Despite this, they each taught me different lessons. So here's to you two!
Raeanna (Anna)
You were my first true friend at college. I remember when I first met you I could not help but think you did not like me because I was loud and you were so quiet. It soon became apparent after cooking you our first roomie dinner that despite our differences we would soon become the best of friends. So close in fact, that we spent 99.9% of our time together. We had almost all of our classes together, we did our laundry together, we had a set dinner time every week night, and eventually your bedroom became my comfort zone when I was down. During this time, I did not realize how much you began influencing the person I am becoming today. You taught me to always be positive. I have always been a pessimist. I always found the worst in every situation. You taught me the optimism I have needed to survive. Now, instead of thinking of that test I failed as the end of the world I see it as room for improvement. You make me live a glass half full instead of half empty lifestyle.
Christen (Chrisphin)
While we were rooming together you always referred to yourself as the third-wheel to mine and Rae's friendship, but looking back you were never the third wheel. You were the person who showed me that it is okay to be different. I was always the type of person that tried to fit in with everybody around me. I always thought of my differences as bad rather than qualities that made me unique. So thank you for showing me it is okay to eat obnoxious amounts of ramen, drinking cream soda did not make me "weird", and that fitting in was not the way I needed to live my life.
Unfortunately, I ended up transferring my freshman year to another college. I had to leave these two behind (I'm still crying), but now I have been blessed with having not just one, but two amazing roommates!
Savannah (Savvy Sav)
Should I say Sav or Twin??? When I first transferred I was overwhelmed and quite frankly scared out of my mind. You taught me that even random strangers can quickly become your savior (but always Jesus first!!). I never believed in the kindness of strangers until my first day of classes when I got lost and you took the time out of your day to Facetime me just so I could make it to class on time. You were always up to drive me to get food and you showed me the good of UNA.
Bethany (BLamb)
Wow #4 you would figure you'd be the one that I haven't learned anything from am I right? Yet here I am literally sitting across from you in the floor of our dorm room on our (slightly) hairy carpet writing about what a blessing you are! You make me laugh, drink (almost) as much sweet tea as I do, you do not get mad about my side of the room being messy all the time, my alarms going off for 30 minutes every morning, and my phone calls from my guy at 6 in the morning while you're sleeping. Sometimes I cannot decide if we are besties or dating because you are always up to get food and we literally do everything together. I am glad to call myself your fist decent roommate, and maybe you will not get mad about my antics any time soon!
So thanks to my roomie, Chrisphin, Sav, and BLamb for making my college life bearable, and I hope everybody has been able to find at least on friend that has taught them something during their college career like I have!!
