Something needs to change

The horrific events at Pulse night club have been heavy on my heart. It’s been hard reading anything about it. The stories of those who lost their lives bring me to tears. We live in a world where someone can get a gun, and in a matter of minutes make a decision that will leave an imprint on the world forever. Why is that?

The sad thing is that I have this overwhelming feeling that nothing is going to change. A few months from now every reporter will be busy with another story. Guns will still be an issue. The U.S will still be known as the country with the most mass shootings, and Americans will still think that Muslims are the problem. It all makes me just so sick.

It saddens me that a whole group of people are being blamed for what has happened. I understand that people are scared and want answers. People want action and justice, but walking around and blaming every Muslim for something that one person did isn't logical. It doesn't make sense and it needs to stop.

I want to see things change. I want the U.S to have stricter regulations on the purchasing of guns. In the U.K, Norway, Iceland and a few other European countries police officers walk around unarmed, but in the U.S the thought of that — well there isn't much of it. That would never happen here, yet we have the most issues with firearms. If people could stop thinking about the horrors that would happen if they didn't have the right to bare arms, and start thinking about all innocent lives that have been taken due to these arms maybe we could gets somewhere.

I’m only 22 years old and I don't know much about how things work, but I do know that the second amendment has allowed 136 mass shootings to happen in the U.S within the first 164 days of 2016. Knowing that should be enough to want to change things. I’m not saying that we should get rid of the second amendment all together, but I think it's time we stop sitting around and waiting for the next mass shooting to happen.

I cant stand seeing people in fear of their lives for who they are because someone has the the power to buy a weapon and take everything they have. Living in fear isn't normal. What has happened isn't normal.

I’m desperately wanting something to happen.

Something needs to happen.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
