An Open Letter to Trump Supporters

You need to vote this November

Dear Trump Supporters,

Trust me, I understand. Maybe your favorite candidate dropped out of the race too soon. As a Republican, I still won't let the dream of John Kasich die. Maybe you're outraged that Bernie Sanders lost to Hillary Clinton, and are voting Trump to spite Hillary. I understand. Or maybe, you're just an independent who understands how the electoral college system works, and have to vote Hillary or Trump, yet somehow you think Trump is the best choice. Still, I'm a very understanding person. I know your dilemma.

But this letter isn't to say that I understand why you're voting, it's to say why I don't think you should vote for Trump. Before you click out of this article, please, hear me out. Despite the obvious hate-mongering that he is doing, he is dividing our country. He is spreading white nationalist rhetoric that says that only white people born in the US or otherwise belong here. For example, his white foreign wife is allowed to come to the United States. His white foreign mother is allowed the same, but a brown Mexican, who we share our borders with, is not.

His language is also dividing our interfaith communities. Our first amendment allows any citizen to practice any religion that they want. Not because the founding fathers wanted to be nice or politically correct, but because during that time in Europe, those who were not of a certain faith were exiled, executed, or died in holy wars. Many sought asylum in the Colonies. Our founding fathers did not want history to repeat itself; yet, it seems as if it is going to if Trump is elected President.

His divisive language aside, the real reason no one should vote for Donald Trump is that it is disrespectful to the highest office of our land. Most candidates who run for President went to undergraduate school. They then went to law school to ensure that they knew and understood the laws and how to write and enforce them. After that, they practiced law or held public office where they governed or represented a state of people, sometimes just a city or county. This allows them to put what they learned in law school to use. They understand policy, budget, and all other topics related to government. When they decide to run, it takes years to prepare before they can actually run in the primaries or caucuses.

This is important because Trump has done none of these. He has his undergraduate in economics, but he has not been to law school or served in public office. He has not spent years of hard work, education, money, and service that every other individual who was nominated by the major parties has. Even though Trump may understand business, he does not understand government, a crucial element to being the head of one of the main branches of government. For him to bypass all of this, shows that he does not respect the Oval Office for what it is: a symbol of personal determination, hard work, and service to public office. He treats the Oval Office like it's just another business venture.

This November, I beg you to not vote for Donald Trump. Vote for Hillary Clinton who is overtly qualified for this position. Vote for Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee, who has previously ran for President and public office. Vote Gary Johnson, the Libertarian former governor of New Mexico, who understands business and government.

Trump voters, I am asking you to respect the highest position in the land and that you vote, but don't vote for Trump.

Sincerely,

A Concerned Voter

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
