What To Do When Grief and Difficulty Overwhelm Your Life

Dear person reading this,

Have you ever been in a dark place? One where you felt like a fog of sad emotions overcame your entire existence. I have been there too. What if I told you, you don't have to stay there and wait for it to pass?

What if I told you there is hope right this second?

What if I told you this isn't just a "what if" scenario but real life truth?

So here we go...

What can you do when you are overcome? No matter what the situation… No matter the emotion…

We have to realize three things:

1. God is close to the brokenhearted.

Psalm 34:18 says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

2. He is the same no matter what.

Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

3. His promises are still true.

Isaiah 41:10 says, "So do not fear for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will encourage you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous (victorious) right hand."

I cannot imagine going through great loss or even just living life without God. I can't. He is the source of our hope, encouragement and endurance.

Romans 15:13 says, "May the God of hope fill you will all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Romans 15:5-6 says, "May the God who gives you endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude for each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Speak truth into your own life!

Romans 8:38-39 says, "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

As you go through your day, speak truth into your life. As you go through today, maybe through tears and through smiles, you can press on KNOWING He is with you.

Say it out loud:

He is FOR me.

He is upholding me.

He is my HOPE, ENCOURAGEMENT, my ENDURANCE and He knows where I am at.

He SEES me (Proverbs 15:3).

He has my tears because, Psalm 56:8 says, "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book."

No pain you experience goes unnoticed. Invite Him into your sorrow. No human can match the peace He gives. If you need to be held, ask Him to hold you. If you need a shoulder to cry on, He is there.

Know He sees you and He catches your tears as they fall. You are precious to Him. Speak truth into your life - pick up your Bible and realize He is right there.

The woman who cleaned Jesus' feet in Luke 7:36-50 was crying. She cleaned His feet WITH her tears. What did Jesus say to her? Verse 50 says, "Your faith has saved you; go in PEACE."

Only Christ can give us peace whether it is to our spirit, our heart, or our mind.

He sees you! Go to Him with whatever your trouble is just like she did. When it is time to get up and go you will leave in peace.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
