An Open Letter To My Spring Semester Self

Future self, don't forget...

Dear Spring Semester Self,

How's it going, girl? You stressed out yet? I hope not. This is your very last semester of college EVER, and I think there are a few things that I need to tell you in order to help you cling to every moment possible.

1. Stop living in the future.

I can't remember a time when you were living in the present. I can count on less than one hand how many times you've quickly realized that whatever was happening to you in that moment was actually in. That. Moment. For so long you have thought about your future: planning it, searching for answers, working your way through said plans. But my question for you is this: what will happen when that future comes? Will you live in that future moment then, or look back and wish you had embraced the past's present? You have your plans, you have your dates, you have your planner -- but give it a break. Sit quietly and take in your surroundings and the friends that are with you. They won't be there for much longer.

2. Quit replacing friend time with work time.

Speaking of your friends, how about spending time for them more often? Like I said, you won't be around each other much longer. In five short months, you will all be graduating and off living separate lives. Instead on depending on group texts to keep your friendship alive after graduation, focus on filling your last spring semester with moments that are worthy of a phone call or weekend trip to see each other! Have an impromptu dance party, watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days while sharing a gallon of ice cream, take a road trip, volunteer at a soup kitchen...just spend time with the people who have blessed your college years.

3. Attend school events.

Remember when you were a freshman and saw a flyer for the latest campus-wide event? Remember saying "Well, maybe when I get to know more people I'll go to things like that." You're a graduating senior and you have friends now, so GO DO THINGS. Not only are you paying for events to occur on campus, but you're also missing out on memories that could be made! Whether you choose to bring your friends or explore new campus events solo, you don't want to miss out on experiencing your college campus in new, exciting ways.

4. Love unconditionally.

Your last semester will fly by, and you do not want to spend it in petty fights over who washed the dishes last or who decided not to come to latest movie night. Stay far away from the hate that so often fills social media, and instead go out of your way to love your friends and family. Who couldn't use a little more love in their life?

Enjoy your final semester here at school. Look fondly on all the time you have spent here, and remember the beautiful relationships and life lessons you have learned. Do your best to stay positive and spread that happiness to others. Take breaks, but not naps; you don't want to waste a moment of your precious time left! Have an amazing spring!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
