An Open Letter To My Person

You are always there for me when I need you

An Open Letter To My Person
Brooke Schulzkump

My Person,

You are always there for me when no one else is. There is not a single soul in this universe that can make my heart as happy as you do. You know everything about me, and yet you still love me. That is something that I could never understand. I love you for what you do for me and how you do it with such ease.

When I am crying for absolutely no reason, you are the first person I call or text. You know just the right words to say to me with whatever is going on because you know me better than I know myself. I am grateful for all the times that you answer my 2am phone calls and talk with me until the sun comes up.

If I am in the mood for ice cream, you are a phone call away and usually craving it as well. You and I go on so many crazy adventures from driving around catching Pokemon to just a run to McDonald's. When I am in the mood for a crazy night, you are the person I call.

I can always depend on you to tell me like it is. You won't every sugar coat anything. You know to tell me the truth even though it may hurt me, it's best in the long run. You always have my best interests at heart which is why I am glad that God blessed me with a best friend as wonderful as you are.

In turn, I know all of your secrets and stories. Which if we ever stop being friends (doubtful), we shall never share any of each others secrets and/or stories. The reason I know them is because I know you, better than most. Everyone needs someone to know absolutely everything about them so they can give you the best advice that they can. I am glad that I am that person for you and that you are my person for that.

You are the one person in my life that I could never live without. When we hurt each other the world comes crashing down. There is nothing worse than when we betray each other. I know we both have done it, but it is hard to forgive someone that you trust with your life when they do something that breaks you. We get through it though, that is how we keep going. Our relationship is so much stronger because of the mistakes that we committed. We wouldn't be where we are without all of the struggles we have bee through, but we stay friends for the memories and good times.

A majority of my happiest times are spent with you, also so are some of my darkest. I wouldn't have wanted to spend them with anyone else besides you. I cannot wait to tackle the world with you by my side. You are my rock and my best friend. You are my maid of honor and my sidekick. There are so many different names that I can call you, but my favorite one to call you is my person. So I would like to say thank you for all that you have done and continue to do for me. I love you!

Sincerely,

Your Person

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
