To My College Roommates Who Put Up With My Craziness

I really didn’t know what living with you would be like, but now I do.

To My College Roommates Who Put Up With My Craziness

Dear Roommate (former and current),

When I met you, I had no idea just how cramped our living space would be, or how much time I would actually spend with you in that tiny space. I had no idea how much I would learn about you, about your past, about your hopes and dreams. I never would have guessed I would love you so much, or you would be that person that I would be totally okay with being completely broken around. I really didn’t know what living with you would be like, but now I do.

First of all, thank you. Thank you for putting up with my craziness, and my ever growing pile of clothes next to the closet. I really appreciate you always talk to me with love, and you’re always there for me, even when I don’t recognize it. I see what you do for me from day to day, and how you always make sure to let me know I’m appreciated.

I’ve had some of the best times with you, whether it be meals that we’ve spent together, movie nights, spontaneous moments of bonding or even just those moments when we just quietly sit in each other’s company. I love that we don’t have to entertain each other; we can just spend time being together. Our random adventures to pick up toothpaste or coffee are some of my favorite memories.

I love being able to be silly with you. I can sing about my toe socks or my giant teddy bear and you won’t bat an eye. I’ve learned to love your silly faces or the sounds you make when you’re trying to settle down from a long, hard day.

The biggest challenge I’ve had to face has been making sure no matter what, I always make time out of the craziness of school and life to always be there for you too. I know I haven’t always been the best at noticing when things are not so sunny, or at making sure to let you know where I am… I’m working on it.

I’m working on a lot of things, and that includes being a better roommate, and a better friend. I have a lot left to learn about friendship and how to show you that you are valuable to me in a way that speaks to you especially. I don’t always do things the right way, but I know that no matter what, at the end of the day, you’re someone I can come to and trust when I need a shoulder to cry on, or just talk to about that crazy paper that I have to turn in in two days.

No matter what, I want you to know I’m always here for you. Even if I seem like I’m lost in my own little world, I will always make time for you. You mean the world to me, and I’m so thankful that of all of the people in the world, you’re the one I get to share my space with, no matter how cramped it is!

With much love,

Your college roommate.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
