Open Letter to My College Bestfriend

One of the scariest things I have had to do in my life is start over at a new school, surrounded by new people. The idea of whether I would fit in around the people at this new school was something that filled my head with worries everyday before move in day. Luckily I was able to find my person- you.

Everybody has their own stories on how they met their college best friend, and we always laugh when people ask us how we met. For those wondering, me and my best friend met when doing "speed dating" in our speech class. She asked me what my favorite quote was, and I told her I didn't have one; and that's exactly what she told the rest of the class, along with that I found her funny. After our classes that day, we went to lunch together at one of the dining halls on campus. Right away we were sharing our life stories and basically began sharing our deepest secrets with one another.

Not many people are as lucky as I am when first going off to college. Thankfully for me, I found my person; the person that I connected with right away, and someone that accepted me right off the bat. In high school, I wasn't that outgoing and I was shy unless it was the right person. Meeting you, it opened me up more than before; now you are probably wishing you could get me to be quiet again. I honestly never thought I would meet someone other than my high school best friend that understood me as much as she did, but then there you were.

It has only been a few months that I've known you, but honestly it feels like I've known you forever. You have been by my side since day one, even after I say I don't want to go to target because I'm taking a nap. You've been there through the crazy roommate situation, the ups and downs with boys, and not to mention everything else this crazy world seems to throw at us. I mean it when I say, I have no idea what I would do without you.

Thank you for sticking by my side through it all, even if you do hate my constant napping or me not always wanting to go to target. I am thankful to have a friend like you, someone that is able to keep me sane through all the craziness that goes on.

Meeting you was one of the best things that ever happened to me in college. You are stuck with me for life. It has been one crazy semester with many great memories, and I can't wait to share many more with you. Next year will be a whole lot better with you as my roomie. Thank you for all that you do, all that you have done, and all that you will do.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
