Open Letter To My Church Family

Everything I would like my second family to know

Open Letter To My Church Family

Dear Church,

If you ever wondered if the events you organized had an impact on anyone, they did have an impact on me. If you ever wondered if your smile brightened anyone's Sunday, it brightened mine. If you ever wondered if people took notice of your part in the church and if it made a difference, you have made a difference in my life.

When I began attending our church, I was strictly a part of the youth group. I didn't come on Sunday mornings, and I didn't know many of the individuals who did. However, little by little, you presented evidence of Christ's love in that church. You spoke with me, got to know me, and invited me to participate in as many church ministries as I liked, and soon, I became a member of the church.

You have seen me through so many important moments in my life. When I received my driver's license, the first place I drove by myself was to church. When I posted pictures online of my prom, you were the ones liking and commenting about how beautiful I was. You encouraged me and celebrated my graduation with me from high school, and many of you were a part of helping me choose which college to attend. Because of all of the things you have already helped me through, I hope that one day you will be there for the future important moments of my life. I hope that you will be there for my college graduation, my wedding and for my children's birthdays.

Ultimately, I am writing this to say two things. First, I would not be the woman I am today if it were not for your love, support and influence. So many of you have told me how proud you are of all I have accomplished and all I have contributed to the church, but it is important to me that you understand none of it would have been possible without you. With every word of encouragement, every piece of advice given and with every hug, you molded me into who I am today. With everything I am, I would like to say thank you for that.

Second, I want to say don't ever stop investing in the new people, in the youth, in the children, and in the adults of our church. Pastors may come or go, the music may evolve, and attendance may increase or decrease, but the impact you have on those with whom you come in contact is something you can control. I want to ensure for years to come that individuals can be encouraged and changed by this church, just as I was. So please continue to be the church that has been my home away from home for years.

Thank you all so much.

Sincerely,
Victoria Becker.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
