An Open Letter To My Big Brother

To My Big Brother,

Since the day I was born, I have had you by my side, cheering me on from my first steps and my first words to the first time I scored a goal in field hockey and to my high school graduation. You have been there for me through everything.

You have gone above and beyond in the role of being a big brother.

As much as we have teased each other or may get mad sometimes, we always reset the next day. I apologize for all the times I told on you or got you in trouble when I was little and for you getting stuck doing the dishes. Thank you for always going trick-or-treating with me. Thank you for always being just as excited as I was for Santa to come on Christmas. Thank you for always playing Guitar Hero with me even though I clearly was awful at it, but you knew it meant a lot to me to get time with my big brother. I know I could be a pain sometimes, but thank you for always continuing to love me. We only get into some tough times because we care about each other.

You have been my protector. You've stepped in when necessary to keep me on the right path. I am thankful for you keeping a close eye on me and not letting anyone or anything hurt your little sister. Thank you for taking time out of your day to let me talk to you about anything and everything: from happy tears to sad tears and good times to bad times. You've always guided me in the right direction helping me overcome any situation. You give me your best advice and sometimes it is brutally honest, but always advice I need to hear and appreciate hearing in the end.

I couldn't be more proud of the person you have become. Not only have you watched me grow up, but I have seen you transform into the amazing man you are today. Not only are you my brother, but you are my Airman and my Hero. I am so proud of all that you do and your accomplishments in the military.

No matter the distance and despite the fact I see you only once a year (or twice if I am lucky), I am thankful for your constant love and support. I am thankful for the phone calls, texts, FaceTimes, and for the talks we have when you visit home.

Distance for sure makes it tough: I always wish I could get a hug from my big brother. I always wish I could go get food with you. I always wish we could go to the gym together and be "gym rats". But it just makes it that much more special when I see you. Even though you're not always around, you go above and beyond to be there for me as best as you can.

Thank you for pushing me to strive to better myself. Thank you for turning my frowns into smiles. Thank you for showing me I deserve the best in life.

I hope I have made you proud; you most definitely give your little sister a lot to be proud of and thankful for.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
