An Open Letter To My High School Best Friend

Because really, I couldn't have done it without you

Dear Best Friend (More like sister),

It’s hard to even know where to begin when writing this letter, as I feel like there is so much I could say that would fill up pages, simply to say thank you for being the closest thing I have to family, especially while navigating high school.

To begin, even though now we go to different schools far away from each other, I know that our friendship is one that will last a lifetime. Not gonna lie, reminiscing on the old days and laughing our heads off over breaks is easily the number one thing I look forward to. We may have not known what we were doing planning those prom group pictures and trying to impress boys, but hey, we tried.

Second, I really just want to say thank you. Thank you for being by my side when life got tough and I got stressed out about grades, looks, boys and all things in between. There wasn’t one thing I couldn’t tell you that would make you leave my side. You always offered support where it was needed, and always listened when I needed to vent. For that, I can never be grateful enough.

Thank you for embracing my crazy family, and for basically becoming a member of it. I could always count on you to join in the corny jokes my dad frequently told at dinner and to treat me like the sister I never had. Also, thanks for letting your closet become my closet when I was convinced I had nothing to wear, and for always knowing which “side” to take pictures on. (We’ve got this one down).

Not only have you helped me grow as a person, but you've helped me grow in my faith with the Lord as well. I love how we can go from being silly and crazy to being serious and talking about the things that matter in life. I know I can always ask you for a prayer or advice on how I should handle a situation because of your strong faith. No one can get through this life alone, and I'm blessed to have you by my side to make the most of it.

Even though now we don’t get to talk or see each other as much, we never have any problem picking up right where we left off. It doesn’t matter if our Facetime dates are 30 minutes or three hours long, you better believe I am getting every detail about that boy you went on a date with Friday night. No matter how much time passes by before seeing each other, you’re always the first person I think to call when something exciting in my life happens and I love knowing you’re the same way too.

I could never have survived high school without you, and I sure couldn’t survive life now. Here’s to the lifelong friendship and memories to come in the future. Love you lots.

Love,

The sister you never had, but ended up with

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
