Dear members of the class of 2016,

I know you're excited to get out of your town and begin your future. You're excited to move on to college or work and to meet new friends and see new places. I get it. It really is so exciting. Senior year was one of my favorite years and the summer following graduation was unforgettable.

But as your last weeks are coming to a close, I encourage you to cherish them. Yes, you're tired of the schoolwork and you're more concerned about getting a good tan and what concerts you'll be going to. But just for a minute, forget about all of the wonderful things in the future and live in the present.

Participate in your senior week, go to the dances, don't get dismissed before pep rallies. Just take part in every activity no matter how stupid you may think it is now. I promise you, you'll be happy you went in the future. Even after just being in college for one year, I've realized how many things I took for granted.

I complained too much about work, worried too much about grades, stressed too much about college, didn't tell my friends how much i appreciated them, spent too little time with my family and wished my time away. I wanted to be done with the paper and math and just be on the beach soaking up the sun with my best friends.

Before you know it, summer will be done and you'll be on your way to college or beginning your job, and that's another thing I've realized. Time really does fly. First thing it's graduation day, then your party, then your friends' parties, and memorial day, the Fourth of July and boom. Move-in day.

I'm not saying this is your peak because there's even greater things awaiting you in the future. But this is a very underrated, important part of your life. It's a time you should not take advantage of.

So enjoy these last moments with your classmates. Unfortunately, it's very true that life takes everyone in very different directions and this may be the last time you see some people. Take it all in. Live it up. Enjoy it.

Once the summer has come and gone try to keep in touch with the people you want to remain close with. But on that note, don't continue to fight for people who don't put in the effort. Those who want to be in your life will make that clear.

So I leave you with this- look back on your 12 years of school - forget the negatives, and look at the positives. Be thankful for the friends you have made, the opportunities you have been given or the ones you've fought for, the lessons you've learned and the memories you'll never forget. These elementary school, middle school and high school years have shaped you into the person you are today. Take all of this excitement in and really appreciate it while you can. Then, enjoy the rest of your time as a high schooler and get ready for all of the awesome things that lie ahead in college, or the work force and life in general.

Sincerely,

A member of the class of 2015

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
