Growing older I've come to realize that I went into college pretty blindly. I never had anyone give me any real advice on what was going to come my way. If I could share a few things with you, before you start your freshman year, this is what I would tell you:
C’s do not get degrees, and working hard is not overrated
Getting good grades can set you up for a better future. Especially if you want to go to graduate school, or medical school. Work hard, and it'll pay off in the long run. I know it may seem difficult when everyone wants to go out every night, but you'll be better off with better grades.
Sometimes you just have to drive home, just to hug your mom or see your dog
Being away from home is hard. There's nothing wrong with going home after a long, difficult, week to see your mom or get some much needed loving from your dog. Sometimes all you need is a little TLC.
When you find your person, don’t ever let her go
Because she will always be there in a blink of an eye to cry with you, shower you with hugs and love, and put a smile on your face again. Losing her is like losing a piece of yourself.
That girl that came and sat down next to you in the giant lecture hall filled with a hundred empty seats? Talk to her, making new friends and even a new study buddy can be great
Making friends in a setting like college can be difficult for some people who are homebodies, like myself. However, I do not regret meeting people in my classes. These people became some of my closest friends.
Call your parents often. Even if it’s just to let them know you’re still alive. They will appreciate it.
Talking to my mom every week is the highlight of my week. She tells me about work and I gossip with her about who did what and what happened in class that week. It's like I never left home.
Lastly, cherish every moment.
College flies by so quickly. Between friends, significant others, school, and work you don't have time to slow down. Make sure you make the best of every day and cherish the memories you make with the people you have. College is going to be the best 4 years of your life. Don't blink because you might miss it.
