An Open Letter to The Class of 2016

Going off to college can be scary

An Open Letter to The Class of 2016

Dear Class of 2016,

You made it. High school is over and you're about to start anew. You're about to be in a new environment with new people, and it's going to be scary.

Just having finished my first year of college and facing some difficulties throughout the year, there may be some things you want to know.

College is awesome. You have no one there to tell you what to do or when to do it, you're completely on your own. At times that's the best thing in the world, and at times it's not. You're going to miss your mom or dad reminding you to do your laundry or homework. They're not going to be there to nag you, so do not let your laundry pile up and do not procrastinate your school work.

Not everyone from high school who you considered your 'best friend' will keep their friendship with you. College shows you who your true friends are from home. You will lose friends from high school, it happens, and it happened to me. You might even lose the person who was your partner in crime, your absolute best friend, but that's okay because it just shows they were never really there for you. You'll even discover friends from back home that you never thought you'd be friends with, and surprisingly they're the ones helping you, pushing you through your semesters, and help you find your self.

Yes, you do not have to go to school from 7:34 AM to 2:30 PM, and don't have to follow a bell schedule anymore. But, you still need to show up for class and do your work. Staying on top of your work in college is super important. Once you start slacking it's hard to dig yourself back out of that hole. Also, don't be ashamed to get a tutor or go to the writing center for help!

All the petty high school drama stays in high school. Everything you said about someone, or anything someone said about you will stay in high school. Do not worry about who took who to what dance, or what someone was doing Friday night. Worry about yourself and have fun with your friends now because you don't know when you'll see them next.

You're going to miss home like crazy. You're going to miss your parents, dogs, cats, and your town. But every time you come home it is a big relief, and you can't wait for a home cooked meal.

Yes, you did it. And you're about to start adulthood, but be smart about your decisions, speak your mind, and do not waste any time- each day is precious.

Sincerely,

Me

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
