Dear Newly Employed,
After countless applications and interviews, you have finally landed that new job you have been looking forward to having over this summer season. Hopefully, you have found something that will be enjoyable, and if you really struck luck, a job that could benefit you in your future career. The first day of a new job is a lot like the first day of school. You dress to impress your fellow employees, and you are on your best behavior. Walking into a new job is kind of like walking into your first day of college. New world, new people and a whole lot of nerves. For some of us, it is absolutely terrifying. Many college students are looking for jobs and internships that apply to what we want to do for the rest of our lives. Take an early education major — one might take up a job as a camp counselor. Walking into that first day of camp is all nerves. What if by the end of summer, you realize that this wasn’t for you? This can go for any student who is trying to figure out that their major is for them. New jobs can be scary, but that doesn’t stop us from walking into that first day.
The first day of work can be awkward. You don’t know how to act, and you are a stranger to all the other employees. Who are you going to talk to? Will the other employees like you? A million questions and problems fly through your head. Something everyone needs to remember, though, is that we have all gone through the first day. Every person you meet when you arrive has been in the exact same position you are in. Some may sympathize, and others may not, but that doesn’t need to stop you. Let’s face the music, the first day is going to consist of unsure decisions and hopeful thinking. Soon enough, though, you will get a hang of things, and not long after, you will watch someone else come in for their first day and realize how the tides have turned.
To wrap this up, I want to say good luck to anyone who is entering a new job this summer. I know things might be nerve-wracking, but don’t let that get in the way of your excitement. This is a brand new opportunity the world has provided you, so embrace it! Also, remember that this won’t be your last first day. If this job doesn’t work out, another one is just around the corner. Stay positive, though, because you earned this job for a reason. Stay confident, and don’t forget to smile. Be bold, and talk to the other employees first. Just because this is your first day doesn’t mean it needs to be awkward or uneventful. This is a new adventure, and the only way to find out where it is taking you is to step up and conquer your first day.
Best Wishes,
A Fellow New Employee
