An Open Letter To Freshmen Girls

To the girls that are just trying to figure it out:

Being the lowest ranked students on the totem pole again, is never easy. Here are some pro-tips on how to navigate a successful freshmen year:

1. Beware of the Old Men

You might think that you are hot-stuff when the older, more worldly fifth-year senior comes to talk to you. He will be so smooth and throw out all his best moves, but you have to remember he is not interested in being your friend. The look in his face may appear innocent but he is hoping that your 18 year-old self will be just naïve enough. These blazer, blue jean, and loafer wearing elderly members of the college community can be found at your local frat house.

2. Going Greek Isn't Everything

The stressful thing, called rush, has been known to break hearts while bringing girls with a common interests together. It can be a fantastic way for you to make instant friends, but it is important to remember that being in a sorority isn't everything. If you don't find a forever home in the "Greek" community, I PROMISE, you will be okay. Just be confident and true to yourself. Everything will work out like it is supposed to.

3. Really No One Cares

When you were in high school, it seemed important to be the best at everything you did. People compared you to others and gossip was what the school ran off of. Well sister, you are in college now. No one cares. Its not that we all don't want to, its just that we are now more interested in our own roller coaster of a life. Your grades, personal life and mistakes are your business so don't live like all eyes are on you anymore.

4. Call your Mom

Seriously, Call her. When you get here, you will have that sense of freedom that is indescribable. You will try to act like everything is "okie dokie" and avoid calling her because that's what cool people do (insert obnoxious laugh). For both of your sakes, you need to let her in. She is missing you like crazy right about now and if you were being honest, you miss her too. Shoot, I talk to my mom sometimes three or four times a day. There is never shame in needing your mom.

5. School Work First

Procrastination is a horrible habit to have and develop. Your school work should be top priority because grades are what keep you in this awesome place! Remember to focus on your life goals, and to take healthy breaks along the way.

6. Cut the Superficial Crap

There will be times that you think you aren't good enough. You will think your clothes selection needs work, your makeup could be more contour, and that you need to strive to be more Boho-chic. Hun, you are beautiful. Love your flaws and your confidence will bring the world to you.

At times, we all lose bits of ourselves in the mess of life. One day you will look back, and see that you have grown so much over your college years and be thankful that you kept it together.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
